The “living humanities”: Creative arts and academic humanities in tension

When the Australian Academy of Humanities (AAH) was established in 1969, poet Judith Wright elected as a founding fellow. Scholar and fellow A. D. Hope saw her inclusion boding well for Academy’s purpose to foster promote humanities. Six years later, complained about lack opportunities creative practitioners claimed that she being excluded from life. While some fellows supported Wright, majority disagreed belonged fellowship. This incident is representative broader “unclear connection” between “living humanities” – H. C. Coombs described arts what Simon During terms “academic humanities”. Focusing on AAH’s first three decades, this article traces different ideas held by leading humanities scholars towards shows how AAH maintained boundaries created exclusions. A major shift occurred with John Dawkins reforms higher education. Key figures at played roles seeking solutions alarmingly low levels Research Council (ARC) funding “creative research”. Despite such efforts, continued elect very few into its core fellowship throughout 1990s ARC data inequities research remain an intractable problem.
